A culinary balancing act between snacks and haute cuisine.

International cuisine and above all Mediterranean specialities are finding their way into Carinthian cooking pots and that's a good thing, because variety is the spice of life.

Guests are often unfamiliar with Carinthian home cooking. But delicacies from grandma's cookery book that have been passed down through the generations are not to be missed. If you see ‘Kärntner Kasnudl’, ‘Kirchtagssuppe’ or ‘Reindling’ on the menu, you should definitely try a ‘taste test’. In rustic taverns, the ‘original Carinthian Brettljause’ is served with well-done bacon, ‘hoarten Wiaschtln’ (air-dried sausages), ‘Glundnan Kas’ (roasted cheese), ‘Verhackerts’ (spiced spread) and brown bread on a small chopping board with a ‘Feitel’ (small snack knife). It is accompanied by alcoholic apple cider and a ‘Frakerl’ (small bottle) of fruit schnapps.

From this hearty Carinthian speciality to renowned and refined gourmet cuisine, the culinary range of the region could not be greater or more varied.
