Bike route - "Schwarzatal cycle path" - Neuhaus am Rennweg to Bad Blankenburg

You ride the route downhill from Neuhaus towards Bad Blankenburg in a relaxed way. The following description corresponds to the opposite direction for ambitious riders uphill.

The Schwarzatal cycle path runs from Rudolstadt-Schwarza over Bad Blankenburg, Schwarzburg, Sitzendorf, Unterweißbach, Obstfelderschmiede, Lichtenhain, Oberweißbach, Cursdorf to Neuhaus am Rennweg.

In Bad Blankenburg, among other things, you can visit the Fröbel Museum, the town hall with the Fröbel Hall and the Dr. Steuer Cabinet. With Greifenstein Castle, the town not only has a unique landmark but also a popular excursion destination where you can visit a small museum exhibition in addition to the gastronomy area.

From Bad Blankenburg, the path leads through the wild romantic Schwarzatal to Schwarzburg. Geological features include steep rock cliffs and the so-called whirlpools which can be seen in places in the riverbed of the Schwarza. The Schwarzatal, its side valleys and heights are also known as the "Thuringian herbal garden/Olitätenland" due to the great variety of field, forest and meadow herbs.

On August 11, 1919, Reich President Friedrich Ebert signed the Weimar Constitution in Schwarzburg. Worth seeing are the "Forest Botanical Garden" and the castle with the Kaisersaal and armory. The cycle path church in Schwarzburg, located directly on the cycle path, offers refreshments from Easter to Reformation Day.

At Obstfelderschmiede it is possible to continue by the Oberweißbach mountain railway. Oberweißbach is known because Friedrich Fröbel, born here in 1782, is recognized worldwide as an educator and founder of kindergarten. In Cursdorf, a visit to the historic Glass Apparatus Museum is worthwhile. Neuhaus am Rennweg has one of the most beautiful and largest wooden churches in Thuringia, consecrated in 1892. The church was built in the style of Gothic forms and is entirely covered with slate. The listed slate house in the Neuhaus district of Igelshieb, located directly on the Rennsteig, is the birthplace of Dr. Heinrich Geißler (1814-1879). The son of a glassblower is considered a pioneer of electrical science and vacuum technology.
