Set out to discover a mosaic of landscapes including sea, lagoons, meadows, vineyards, in the heart of the protected Natura 2000 site of "la Grande Maïre," a former branch of the Orb river.
Between the Canal du Midi and the Mediterranean Sea, your first steps lead you to well-known Mediterranean coastal landscapes: fine sandy beaches, dunes, endless pine forests guiding you gradually to a preserved natural environment.
At the heart of "Prés salés" you will encounter animal farms: sheep, horses, bulls alongside rich wildlife: ducks, waders, amphibians, reptiles, living within a "Reed bed," a sanctuary area for these animals.
Portiragnes is a true green lung that will amaze you with its plant and animal diversity!
For a photo stop, enjoy the vastness of these landscapes, the exceptional colors of the sky and, depending on the season, fragrant flowering plants such as broom and Spanish iris.
1
Starting point: Riviérette parking lot. Free parking for cars and motorhomes. To access the start of the route, head towards the sea. Start on your left in the shade of the pine groves at the beginning of the beach access.
2
Viewpoint: following the path in the shade of the pine groves, leave the circuit on your right and take the wooden beach access: on your left rises Mont Saint Loup, an ancient volcano, and on the right, on clear days, the Pyrenean mountain range with Canigou in view.
3
Portiragnes-Plage: continue straight ahead until the open-air kiosk (toilets); from this parking, Place Labech, take Avenue de la Tramontane on your left, walk past the shops up to the Arenas.
4
Portiragnes Arenas: at the Arenas there is an intersection, cross safely at the pedestrian crossing and continue on the opposite sidewalk.
5
Directional: turn right continuing on the bike path (do not go straight onto the dirt path).
6
Canal du Midi: Arrive at the Canal du Midi, continue on your left on the paved path between vineyards and canal. Then enjoy the view of the meadows, followed by a view of Portiragnes and its St Félix church with its octagonal basalt spire.
7
Lock: at the Portiragnes lock, take the road on your left leaving the "Académy de Golf" on your right. Continue straight on the paved road.
8
Directional: at the first intersection (where the "La grande Maïre" sign is), turn right and continue your route.
9
Reed beds: continue straight ahead on the dirt path leaving the paved path on your right to access the reed beds (reed forest forming a shelter area for many birds).
10
Viewpoint: approaching the houses, on your right access the wooden lookout to admire the lagoon area.
Equip yourself with suitable shoes, a water bottle, hats or caps.
In case of high temperatures, it is better to do the route in the morning as part of the walk is without shade.
