The route starts at the Werra riverbank in Hörschel near Eisenach. From the official start or end point of the Rennsteig you pass in Hörschel by the inn "Gate to the Rennsteig", the village church and the Rennsteig hiking house. The first part of the legendary long-distance hiking trail goes uphill, with meadows and fields alternating with forest along the entire way. At the border gate of the former inner-German border we leave the Rennsteig and follow the signs to the Mining Educational Trail up to the Wartburgblick. From here there is a fantastic view over the Thuringian Forest all the way to the Wartburg. From here the different stations of the historic Mining Educational Trail are also walked in reverse order.
The historic Mining Educational Trail provides information on nine panels about medieval copper shale mining in the region, the daily life and working methods of the miners. Today, adits, shafts, and a simulated flume that directs water to an overshot waterwheel can be admired. Here and there the mining spirit Carly August offers useful information.
Along the way you will repeatedly have beautiful views of valleys, villages, and the Wartburg. There are also four shelters with seating areas inside and outside along the way.
Rennsteig start Hörschel - Heimatblick - Gonnermann-Eck - Großer Eichelberg - Tiroler Platte - Flüchtiger Hirsch - Grenztor - Wartburgblick - Mining Educational Trail - Stedtfeld - Hörschel
