St. Martin am Wöllmißberg

A warm welcome to St. Martin am Wöllmißberg - one of the four Styrian hiking villages!

Nestled amidst deciduous and coniferous forests, lush meadows, fertile fields and orchards, and situated away from through traffic – approximately 7 km from Köflach – on a ridge at an altitude of 704 metres above sea level lies the village of St. Martin am Wöllmißberg, which forms the centre of the 2,560-hectare municipality.

A small village with a rural character and organic farming, it boasts a local history museum where the history of the village is lovingly and comprehensively documented.

Thanks to its altitude and abundant woodland, St. Martin am Wöllmißberg also offers itself as a climatic health resort for guests seeking relaxation.

Numerous hiking trails wind their way through meadows and woods, often offering magnificent panoramic views of the charming landscape of Western Styria. Thanks to its rich variety of flora and fauna, this area is particularly popular with peaceful, nature-loving hikers. The famous “Anton Wildgans Memorial” and the accompanying circular walking trail were established in honour of the poet, who began his epic poem “Kirbisch” here in 1925. A walk through the wild and romantic Teigitsch Gorge is also a wonderful experience.

In addition to the local history museum, other sights worth seeing include the parish church of St Martin (first mentioned in documents in 1372, rebuilt in 1695 using older parts) and the ruins of Leonrod Castle (late 12th century).

Another popular destination is the St. Martin power station on the Wöllmißberg, which is fed by the Hirzmann dam and whose Kaplan turbine lies 27 metres underground.

Anglers are also warmly recommended to visit the wild and romantic Langmann dam.
