On cold winter days, there is often a rather advantageous temperature inversion: the higher the hike leads up, the warmer it becomes. The cold, heavy air forms a cold air lake in the valley below, while the temperature higher up already feels spring-like mild. As with our round on the southwest side of the Rötelstein: the first catkins are already blooming in front of the proud farms, unlike the frost flowers on the glass panes in the valley floor. This wonderfully warming hike leads through this preferred sunny side in the Oberberg district. The path mostly follows the farm driveways, but there is also a section across a slope marked with snow poles. The small effort fits very well with the Haidegg estate above, where the well-known author Barbara Passrugger (1910 – 2001) spent most of her life. In her still highly recommended books "Hard Bread" (1989) or "Steep Slope" (1993), she describes the not always easy rural daily life. Times have changed; some of the farms even invite you to a pleasurable stop, like the Reithof.
From the Filzmoos town center bus stop, the path continues a short distance along the main road to the roundabout, then turns left towards the farm alps. At the nearby information point, you can get a free map with marked routes if needed. About 800 meters further downhill, before the “Hofalmstraße toll station”, circular route 7 (Leopichl-Rettensteinhütte-Reithof-Filzmoos) branches off to the right. It initially follows a farm road past the beautiful Wallehen to the last Leopichl farm. In the last curve before the farm, the winter hiking trail marked with snow poles turns right and crosses the moderately steep slope up to the cozy Rettensteinhütte (closed Mondays). Route 7 then follows a farm road on the right again, passing Haidegghof and Reithof downhill. The last kilometer back to Filzmoos runs along the Hammerbach stream.
