This is exactly how one imagines the life of Ronja, the Robber's Daughter: a castle high up on a rock above the valley, surrounded by deep, dark forest and nothing but the silence of nature. However, the castle was not built as a robber's castle but for the so-called "Gueträter," a noble family commissioned at the beginning of the 13th century with guarding the salt on Gutratsberg.

We start our route at Hotel Auwirt and cross Salzburgerstraße. On the other side of the street, we walk straight ahead on the Salzquellenweg (path no. 459a) into a kind of hollow path. Between the houses, it goes quite steeply uphill right at the beginning. We walk through a larger farmstead and follow the Salzquellenweg to its end. From here, a wide gravel road begins that leads us northwest up to the edge of the forest. At this spot is also the small Hubertus Chapel, which invites you to take a short break with its beautiful view and benches and can be reached via a short side path. Behind the chapel, we continue walking straight ahead for about 30 minutes, following the signs to Ruine Gutrat and the yellow spray markings of the SalzAlpenTour. The path gradually rises slightly, until some time later it splits at a junction. While it would continue straight on to Bad Leonhard, we take the narrow path on the right and go downhill over wooden boardwalks and wooden stairs. From here, you can already see the Ruine Gutrat perched on a rock. The return is on the same path.

Sturdy footwear and surefootedness are required on this hike.
The hike to Ruine Gutrat is generally easy to walk and only somewhat more difficult in the last part, as the ruin is located on a rock. Steel cables and a metal grid, however, allow for an uncomplicated ascent. For people with a fear of heights, it could still be a challenge!
Please always keep in mind that these described hikes take place in the mountains, in the open nature, and partly in alpine terrain.

On the Tauern motorway (A10), take the Hallein exit (exit 16) towards Hallein. We follow the signs to the "Zentrum" and turn right onto Pernerinsel at the city bridge. At the roundabout, take the second exit and follow the road out of town to Kaltenhausen.
Take the train to Hallein station, from there take bus no. 170 (Hallein - Salzburg) to Kaltenhausen and then on to Au (stop Au - Auwirt).
Limited parking availability at Hotel Auwirt.
