The stage from the mountain station of the Wildkogelbahn Neukirchen or the Smaragdbahn Bramberg to Hollersbach presents itself with two different sections. The first part, crossing the 2,224 m high Wildkogel, is a classic high-altitude trail. From the starting point to the weather cross, you move continuously between 1,750 and 2,200 m above sea level on green and easily passable ridges.
Then follows the second part of the stage: a long descent on hiking trails down into the Salzach valley, where the last kilometers to Hollersbach are covered.
The terrain is technically moderate, and thanks to well-passable hiking trails, the stage is generally easy to hike. However, it requires alpine hiking experience and stable weather because of the altitude. If the weather does not allow a day in the mountains, we recommend the shorter alternative route 05 Sonnenweg | Bramberg-Hollersbach.
How do you get to the start of your stage? Before this stage, you overnight in the valley in Bramberg or Neukirchen.
If you stay overnight in Neukirchen, then you take the Wildkogelbahn in Neukirchen from the valley station in the town center up to the mountain station. From here, you always hike south of the ridge towards the east until you reach the mountain station of the Smaragdbahn after 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can also take the Smaragdbahn in Bramberg up to the mountain station. From the mountain station of the Smaragdbahn, you start the stage coming from the mountain station of the Wildkogelbahn. The first ascent starts at both cable cars at 9:00 am – if you register in time the day before by 12:00 noon (by email to info@wildkogel-arena.at or by phone at +43 720 710 730), usually the cable car can already be used from 8:00 am.
Here you can find the opening times of the cable cars >>
Tip: With the National Park Summer Card, a ride on the cable car is free of charge. You get the National Park Summer Card from the first night at the participating accommodations.Right behind the Christophorus Chapel at the mountain station of the Smaragdbahn, the hiking trail ascends to the summit of Wildkogel (2,224 m). From here, follow the path slightly downhill along the ridge. At the weather cross, the path leads into the forest and soon meets a forest road. Turn right here to stay on the hiking trail. When you next meet the forest road, follow it a few meters to the left and then turn right back onto the hiking trail. Keep left at the next two junctions and follow the path to a parking lot. Continue straight on the hiking trail until it joins a street. Turn right onto this street and follow the hairpin bends to the Bergkristall guesthouse and further to the Geislhof guesthouse. Behind Geislhof, the hiking trail starts again. It leads downhill in a few bends. At the next opportunity, turn right and follow the path into the village area of Mühlbach. There you will meet an asphalt road again. Keep right here and cross the stream over the bridge on the left side. Immediately afterwards, turn left again. At the fork, choose the right path and then go straight ahead. The path initially ascends slightly to the forest. There, turn right off the asphalt road onto the hiking trail and go slightly downhill again. Then continue on mostly level terrain until the path meets a street again. At this point, keep right and pass the farmhouse. Then go under the Kitzbüheler Alpen Panorama Cable Car and at the next junction take a left again. Walk straight past the wayside shrine and the following waysign and then turn right onto a steep path leading down towards the railway track. Walk along the street beside the railway tracks to the bridge. To reach today's stage destination, the village square Hollersbach, cross the Salzach here and then first turn right and then left. Walk over the parking lot by the bathing lake towards the town center. The path passes the sports field and goes between the houses.
Note: If weather conditions do not allow stage 05, then the alternative route 05 Sonnenweg | Bramberg-Hollersbach is recommended.
