Via Borromea | Stage 2 Orasso - Cannobio

Poco dopo la chiesa di Orasso si imbocca la mulattiera che scende ad attraversare il riale e che quindi risale a mezza costa fino ad incrociare la strada per Spoccia. Si percorre la strada in leggera salita per circa 600 m e quindi si prende la mulattiera che scende ad attraversare il vallone e si mantiene a mezzacosta per lungo tratto. Poco prima di Gurrone si devia sulla destra e si prosegue verso Cavaglio, si scende ad attraversare il riale e si prosegue a mezzacosta fino ad incontrare i resti della cappella "della Torre", nei cui pressi dovette sorgere una fortificazione eretta dai fratelli Mazzarditi, campioni di scorrerie e ammazzamenti nella Cannobio del '400. Proseguendo oltre si raggiunge la cappella "di Coss", alle spalle dell'abitato di Traffiume dove ha idealmente fine il cammino lungo la Borromea. Da Traffiume si scende all'Orrido di Sant'Anna, spettacolare forra scavata nelle rocce da T. Cannobino e si imbocca la pista ciclopedonale che costeggia il torrente Cannobino in sponda sinistra fino al secondo ponte, poi per stradine interne si attraversa tutto il centro di Cannobio fino al lungolago.

The particularly fascinating territory of Valle Cannobina still preserves the unspoilt appearance of the past. The landscape is marked by the testimonies of traditional rural life, based on subsistence farming. The villages are characterised by unexpected views, ancient houses with votive paintings on the faades, small squares, rustic stone fountains, which can be discovered by walking along the narrow pedestrian streets. Some panoramic viewpoints allow you to look towards the other side of the valley with the wild mountains of the Valgrande National Park. In Traffiume, before Cannobio, the Cannobino stream has dug a spectacular gorge, the Orrido di Sant'Anna. Cannobio is the last town on the Piedmontese shores of Lake Maggiore before the Swiss border. Because of its geographical position, it was an important strategic and commercial junction that is still well represented today by the presence of numerous XVII-XIX century buildings that overlook the cobbled streets of the old town centre, such as the sixteenth-century residences of Palazzo Omacini and Palazzo Pironi.
