Naturbadesee Hafnersee

The lake has largely natural shores. The lake lies in a shallow depression at 508 m above sea level. The lake basin has an elongated, rectangular shape. It is divided into 2 basins by a shallow area in the middle of the lake, where the lake bed rises to 1.8 m above the lake surface. The maximum depth of the western basin is 10 m, that of the eastern basin 9.1 m. On the western shore there is an extensive flat moor, on the northern and southern shores there are smaller, reed-covered silting areas. Large parts of the northern shore are used as lawns and bathing areas, and a large campsite has been built on the northeast shore*.

A characteristic feature of the Hafnersee is the brownish color of the water, which is caused by an increased proportion of humic acids. The Hafnersee is a very warm bathing lake, with the highest water temperatures occurring in the second half of July. The lake is strictly stratified from May to October, but due to the relatively shallow depth of 10.0 m, no typical hypolimnion (very cold, lower water layer; < 4°) can develop. Above the bottom, the lake has a temperature of more than 10°C in summer. The spring circulation takes place in March and April, and the autumn circulation in November. The lake is usually frozen from the end of November to March, and ice covers of 40 to 50 cm can occur.
