6 km from Kuurna paddling barn to the market square, Kajaani

Start an interesting city route from the Kuurna paddling barn. The riverside paddling pier is available to everyone. Head with the current towards Kajaani city center. First, you will pass through the narrow Nälkäkanava, which was built during the famine years 1867-68. The canal especially eased the travel of tar boats past Petäisenkoski. Immediately after the canal on the right is the historic Pyörteen estate.

After Kätönlahti, head towards the shore of Kaukavesi, in front of which is the small Limppusaari island. The island has a paddling pier and a campfire site (no firewood service). On the opposite shore of Limppusaari is Kajaani market square. Note that the shore is built with a stone wall and can be a challenging landing place.

On the return trip, you will pass the cold conditioning center and then Kesäniemi beach, next to which is a paddling pier. Then, the railway and road bridges are passed under before Petäisenniska.

The route is also well suited for family trips because there is plenty to see along the way. The Kajaani river current is rarely very strong, but this must be taken into account.
