Matija Vertovec was the first person to write about wine-making, vineyards, and wine cellars in the Slovenian language, when he published his book Vinoreja (“The Art of Winegrowing”) on the subject in 1844.
In his memoriam the Vipava valley tourism created a round trail, 18km long, easy in nature, that leads through rich wineyards, heritage of Matija Vertovec. You will enjoy a pleasent hike through Vipava valley during which you will reach the top of Ostri vrh hill, the highest point of the hike with gorgeus views on the valley. Along the trail you can also observe natural and cultural heritage sites and sites with fossilised remains.
The trail is well marked and equipped with numerous information boards. On one part, the trail joins the Vipava Valley Wine Road, that is connecting the winemakers of the region. The trail passes a few of them, and you are welcome to visit them.
Starting point: under the oak tree before the village of Ustje
After leaving Ustje and traveling through Dolenje, Planina is the next destination, where Matija Vertovec worked, then through Šmarje, where he was born, and finally back through the villages of VrtovÄe and TevÄe to the starting point in Ustje. During the hike visitors will feast their eyes on a number of natural and cultural monuments, including a site with many fossils along the Vipava, the beauty of the Valley’s typical settlements, and the centre of the village of Šmarje, which is a protected piece of cultural heritage. There are many scenic overlooks, for instance at Ostri Vrh, where the whole Vipava Valley can be seen in all its splendor. The well-marked trail winds through vineyards and through old villages in the Valley. This hike takes around 5 hours, or can last even longer if you stop to try a glass of wine at one of the many wine cellars lining the path.

The only real danger on this trail are strategicaly placed wine cellars, that may lure you inside, and may even prevent you finnishing the trail in decent time :)
Just follow the higway through Vipava Valley (towards Nova Gorica), take exit at Ajdovščina and find your way towards the spring of Hubelj, where village Ustje lies.
Vipava valley is easibly accesible by train or bus, village Ustje with a local bus or taxi.

Each year a traditional hike takes place, on the first Sunday after the feast of St. Martin. It begins between 7 and 9 AM under an oak tree before the village of Ustje, a little to the south from Ajdovščina.
Take your time for this trail and make a hedonist's experience out of it. Stop at wine cellars and try different wines, stop at scenic views and sites
