More than a hundred years ago, the famous SoÄa Front also fatally affected the western part of the Karst region. Today, educational peace routes run along the preserved traces of the First World War. Near Lokvica, on the scenic hill Cerje, stands the majestic Peace Monument, dedicated to the defenders of the Slovenian land. Cerje can be chosen as the starting point of numerous routes that take you through the picturesque Karst landscape to explore interesting monuments, artillery positions, trenches, caverns, and even Karst caves that soldiers used as their strongholds.
The peace routes, which spread out from Lokvica and Cerje, Temnica, Opatje selo, Brestovica, and Škrbina, are attractive in every season. You will be enchanted by the beautiful Karst landscape, and the views from Cerje and the Karst edge will completely delight you. On the Karst plateau, the routes are less demanding, but the climb to the Karst edge and Trstelj requires a bit more effort. The routes are connected with peace routes on the Italian side of the border, so you can freely extend your hiking trip.
