Lammassaari is a naturally beautiful esker island that was formed after the Ice Age at the same time as the First Salpausselkä, where the Ukonniemi outdoor area is located. The nature of the island is very diverse: mainly pine-dominated esker forest is varied by deep kettles and the deciduous trees of the shoreline forest. In Lammassaari, you can also get a good understanding of the Saimaa water level changes visible in the terrain on ancient shore terraces. Along the nature trail, you can sit at campfire sites to look at the view opening to Saimaa. In the middle of the island, at the bottom of the kettles, you can listen to the silence. Along the trail, there is also a shelter hut that provides protection from the weather in case of rain. The trail, as its name suggests, is partly a path worn into nature, where you should wear weather-appropriate sturdy shoes. The trail also has steep climbs. The guidance material for the nature trail's checkpoints is available electronically at this link. You can also get the nature trail's guide booklet at the Imatra Spa info point.
Camping or other overnight stays are not allowed in Lammassaari.
The maintenance and upkeep of Lammassaari's nature trail are the responsibility of the city of Imatra.
The Lammassaari nature trail begins at Lammassaari's shoreline landscapes and follows the shoreline all the way to the shelter hut. Shortly after the hut, the trail climbs to go around two small ponds on the island and continues into the interior of the island. In the island's interior, you walk on the eskers and descend occasionally to the edges of kettles. The terrain varies in elevation also because of ancient shore terraces. The last section of the trail follows groomed track/ ski trail base to the starting point.
