Kärnäkoski Fortress Route, Savitaipale

Note. The mill parking lot is a work area and closed to visitors from 1.5.2025 until autumn.

You can get to the route by parking your car near Kärnäkoski mill and fortress. You can start exploring the site from this side of the road by visiting Kärnäkoski Fortress and the old mill. The marked path to the landing harbor and coastal fortress starts on the opposite side of Partakoskentie. Be careful when crossing the road! The path to the landing harbor is wide and the scenery is beautiful. You can eat snacks by the pier of the marina next to the landing harbor, on a bench or at the shelter of the coastal fortress. After the snack break, you can climb up to the top of the coastal fortress or redoubt to admire the views. From the coastal fortress, descend to the path that returns to Kärnäkoski Fortress. At the end of the route, walk a short distance along the edge of Partakoskentie before arriving back at the starting point, the parking lot. Be cautious walking by the edge of the road and crossing it.

It is safest to move in groups on terrain and water if you are not familiar with the area or water bodies. Before hiking, it is good to obtain the necessary maps and guides, and especially when going on water, check the weather forecasts. Dress appropriately for the hike and wear sturdy footwear. It is recommended to also bring first aid equipment, rainwear, spare clothes, and sufficient drinks, especially in summer. Remember to wear a life jacket on the water.

On wet weather and in winter, boardwalks, rocks, and piers can be slippery.

During snowy periods, routes and trails are not maintained.
