This hike leads you along the footsteps of the "Cruel Woman of Forchtenstein," also called "Salah he." You start your hike in the very center of Forchtenstein directly opposite the pilgrimage church "Mariä Himmelfahrt," which is worth visiting. You can conveniently park your car for free in the municipal parking lot. Rosalie, the wife of Prince Giletus of Forchtenstein, was a cruel, heartless woman who, according to legend, oppressed and tormented her subjects and the peasantry while her husband was at war. During this period of her sole rule, she had many of her subjects thrown into the debt tower for the slightest offenses and often without reason, simply because they displeased her. Many found death by starvation in this dark tower. When the prince returned from the war years later, the oppressed farmers complained to him about their sufferings. The prince promised to hold his wife accountable. At a great feast, he spoke of a heartless woman he had met during the war and asked his wife how she should be punished. Rosalie answered, "I would throw her into the debt tower and let her starve miserably." Giletus then replied, "Salah, you have pronounced your own sentence." Many years later, the spirit of Salah he still wandered restlessly through the castle walls of Forchtenstein Castle. To finally bring it peace, the prince had the Rosalia Chapel built on the summit of Heuberg. As cruel as the legend is, the landscape and its individual sites such as the Stations of the Cross on Hausberg, Forchtenstein Castle, and the Rosalia Chapel are beautiful. Take a short detour to the Hausberg to the "Three Crosses" and treat yourself to a "castle tour." Breathtaking views await you! You will be thrilled.

You can conveniently park your car in a free parking lot at the municipal office in Forchtenstein. If you travel by public transport, the bus stop is right on site. Start your hike on the right-hand side down the main street to the Achazium, formerly a princely noble estate, then turn left into Mida Huber Street into the Erbgarten and follow the road. From the fork at Raiffeisengasse, follow it, at the next fork keep left and follow Antonigasse, then go slightly left and continue up Hausberggasse to the intersection with Schloßbergstraße. Then turn right and cross the street. Immediately after the Musikheim, turn into Burggasse and continue following the path to Forchtenstein Castle.
After the castle, at the right curve, continue straight into Reserlgasse and keep it until the small turnaround area. From there, continue straight on the forest path "Reitsteig", follow it for a good stretch, then turn right onto the path with the Rosalia signpost. The directions and signage will guide you up to the Rosalia Chapel. For the return route, you can choose one of the well-marked hiking trails heading towards the town center, or if you prefer convenience, take the bus. There is a boarding option directly below the Rosalia Chapel and a drop-off option directly at the starting point of the hike.
