Along the Altmark circular route alone, 8 Hanseatic cities lie. We experience the 800-year history of the Altmark in hundreds of fascinating churches, castles, and houses of the North German Brick Gothic, which still bear witness today to the economic heyday of the Hanseatic League. The picturesque old towns are nestled in idyllic landscapes. The Elbe and its floodplain landscape, the Altmark Switzerland with its gentle hills, and the nature park landscapes of the Drömling offer a varied backdrop for one of the most beautiful cycling routes in Germany. With only slight inclines, good signage, and cycling-friendly hosts, the Altmark circular route is a hidden gem in the easily accessible region between Berlin, Hanover, and Hamburg.
The Altmark circular route combines culture and nature in the shape of an 8 and leads through the towns of Salzwedel, Wittenberge, Havelberg, Genthin, Tangermünde, Stendal, and Gardelegen on cycle paths and low-traffic connecting roads. In picturesque accommodations, we are pampered after eventful days.
Thematic highlights of the Altmark circular route include, for example, medieval Salzwedel, the many Romanesque fieldstone churches, Arendsee with its monastery and water activities, the stork village Wahrenberg, Seehausen with its church and tower museum, the historic town center in Osterburg, the unique character of Werben as the smallest Hanseatic town in the world, the historic river town Havelberg, Genthin with its cultural offerings from past and present, Jerichow Monastery, the historic old town in Tangermünde, the Elbe town Arneburg, the Hanseatic town Stendal, garden dreams in Tangermünde, the historic town center in Gardelegen, Kunrau Castle, or the local history museum in Diesdorf.

The circular route partly follows the routes of other long-distance cycle paths. The unique architectural sights are shared by the Altmark circular route with the "Romanesque Road." Part of the Altmark circular route runs on the same route as the Elbe Cycle Route. Further connection options are offered in Havelberg by the Havel Cycle Route and near Salzwedel by the Green Belt route. Combination possibilities also arise through the Milde-Biese route (approx. 70 km) between Gardelegen and Arendsee.
The distances of the sensible route sections are as follows:
Stendal - Ackendorf near Gardelegen (94 km)
Ackendorf near Gardelegen - Salzwedel (117 km)
Salzwedel - Seehausen (90 km)

The Altmark consists of agriculturally shaped lowlands as well as forests and heathland. In the southwest are the Drömling and the Ohre lowlands, in the southeast parts of the Colbitz-Letzlingen Heath, and in the east and northeast the Elbe valley lowlands and the Wische. Important rivers of the region besides the Elbe and Havel on the eastern edge of the Altmark are the Jeetze, Milde-Biese-Aland, and Uchte. The largest lake is the northern Arendsee with approx. 511 hectares of water surface and an average depth of 29 m.
The Altmark covers more than 4500 square kilometers and extends over 90 km east-west and more than 60 km north-south. Neighboring regions to the Altmark are the Wendland in the northwest, the Prignitz in the northeast, the Havelland in the east, the Elbe-Börde-Heide region in the south, and the Lüneburg Heath in the west.
Take your time for the cultural treasures along the way and visit, for example, the Altmark and the Winckelmann Museum in Stendal. The region has many buildings from the Romanesque period, which convey their strength, calmness, and clarity to the cyclist.
