Popis

The Milde-Biese-Aland River shapes the landscape of the central Altmark. The cycling trail diagonally halves the Altmark loop and creates a direct connection from the climatic spa Arendsee in the north over the officially recognized health resort Kalbe (Milde) and the Hanseatic city of Gardelegen to the heath village of Letzlingen in the south.

The route runs in 4 stages on paved field, forest, and meadow paths of varying nature. Asphalt or track plates, agriculturally used sandy paths, quiet roads are mostly easy to cycle on.

The bike route offers tranquility and enables interesting nature observations, e.g., godwits and lapwings are native here. In autumn and spring, one can admire large migrating bird flocks. The Altmark is also a very old cultural landscape with Romanesque fieldstone churches from the 12th/13th centuries, Romanesque and Gothic brick churches and monasteries, old castles and manor houses as well as a hunting lodge of the Hohenzollern family.

From the fine sandy beach, from the Arendsee height, a sandy pine heath, down into lush green meadows in the Biese valley, then over the highest elevation of the landscape, the terminal moraine of Dolchauer Berg (94 m), down again into the bird protection area (SPA) on the Mildew meadows near Vienau, through pine heath and fertile arable land to the forests of the Letzlingen Heath runs the Milde-Biese-Aland route. At the edge of Letzlingen, this river springs with three names: Milde-Biese-Aland. The river valley was formerly a kilometer-wide drainage area of the Ice Age meltwaters, so the unity of these watercourses was only recognized late, hence: "Milde-Biese-Aland".

In Arendsee and Kalbe, the Romanesque Road is touched, in Arendsee and Gardelegen the Altmark loop and the travel route Garden Dreams in Gardelegen. Several equestrian farms invite you to sporting activities. Rehabilitation is offered at the MEDIAN clinic in Kalbe.

The Milde-Biese-Aland route divides the Altmark loop from north to south and opens up the central Altmark for cyclists.

Stage proposals:

Stage 1:
  20 km

Heath village Letzlingen - Hanseatic city Gardelegen

Castle church and former Hohenzollern castle in the heath village Letzlingen are a worthy start for this bike route through beautiful nature, but also past castles, manor houses and enchanting village churches. The actual starting point is located north of the village, on a meadow where the Milde first appears as a swampy water puddle. From there, it goes towards Polvitz on sandy field paths through wide pine forests, past "Neue Mühle", "Hoppenmühle" and "Drögemühle", all formerly driven by Milde water. In Ziepel, you can refresh yourself at the artesian village fountain and then follow the Milde further towards the Hanseatic city of Gardelegen. A longer stop is worthwhile here. The historic town center, the old ramparts ("Garden Dreams Saxony-Anhalt"), town hall with Roland and the former Lion Pharmacy with gallery floor and tourist information are worth visiting.

Stage 2:
  15 km

Hanseatic city Gardelegen – officially recognized health resort Kalbe (Milde)

Heading towards Stendal and from the roundabout towards Bismark, you leave Gardelegen to turn onto a small country road towards Lüffingen opposite the last exit on the bypass (Wolfsburg). On the highest point of the village stands the romantic fieldstone church. A visit is possible by appointment.

From here, continue via Schenkenhorst, a small, typically Altmark village from the 15th century (the neo-Gothic church and the manor house of the von Alvensleben family are worth seeing), to Kalbe (Milde).

Shortly before the town, you cross a centuries-old water engineering monument with dam, siphon, bypass ditch, and ford. The health resort Kalbe (Milde) has a beautiful old town with a Romanesque/Baroque fieldstone church. Three small old streets form the "Pottkuchen". Many footbridges cross the small Milde stream. Kalbe is the city of 100 bridges. A beautiful spa park with a water treading facility and a large boxwood garden, the water castle ruin with the castle and local history museum "Altes Wachhaus" are worth a longer walk. The place was already mentioned in the year 983 in an old chronicle. With the MEDIAN clinic, the modern development into a place for health care began.

Stage 3:
  17 km

Officially recognized health resort Kalbe (Milde) – Vienau - Brunau

The cycle path leaves Kalbe with the Milde heading northeast. It crosses the site of the former naval radio station "Goliath" (1942-1945). Shortly thereafter, it passes a large bird protection area of European significance near Mehrin. Breeding birds include, among others, the godwit; migratory and winter guests rest here. From the observation platform, there is a good view. From the summit of Dolchauer Berg (94 m), there is a nice panoramic view. The route now runs along the edge of the terminal moraine "Kalbescher Werder". After a short sandy path, Brunau is reached. "St. Martin with the two very unequal towers is remarkable.

Stage 4:
40 km
Brunau – Gladigau – Krumke – Osterburg – Seehausen – Beuster

In Gladigau, opposite the fieldstone church, stands a baroque parsonage (18th century) with a beautiful parsonage garden and an old bakehouse. From here, continue over Rossau, Klein Rossau, Billerbeck, Zedau, and Krumke (Garden Dreams Park, Cavalier House Café) to Osterburg. In Osterburg, on hot days, you can cool off in the Biese bath (one of the last operated river baths in Europe, completely renovated in 2014/2015, gastronomic service in the bath directly or in the neighboring "Biesecafé", boat rental and camping possible) before continuing towards Seehausen.

Coming from Osterburg on the Altmark loop next to the B189 to the exit to Drüsedau via Seehausen and onwards to Beuster with connection to the Elbe cycle path and Altmark loop. Alternatively, you can cycle from Barsberge to Seehausen. The alternative route via Barsberge is an unpaved path.

Next to the Romanesque St. Peter's Church in Seehausen, you will also find the Tower Clock Museum with its various functional tower clocks, the museum yard with the shoemaker's workshop and an exhibition of historically valuable machines. Also of historical importance is the Beuster Gate, a late Gothic brick tower with a passage from the 15th century. Cooling off is possible in the forest pool. Then it goes on to Beuster, a small idyllic place directly behind the Elbe dike, located on the Old Elbe. Worth seeing here are the Romanesque collegiate church St. Nicholas and the Blue Light Museum with an extensive collection of historical technology, an old smithy, very old agricultural machinery as well as an old DDR-era consumer store with original products.

From Seehausen towards Arendsee and vice versa runs the Bus line 200. The buses are equipped with bike racks for 3 up to a maximum of 8 bicycles and run every two hours.
