The stage offers much natural quietness in the impressive and original river landscape of the Hahnenbachtal. Shortly after the start, we experience great views of the medieval Schmidtburg castle.
Then we reach the visitor mine with a place to stop, where slate was mined in earlier times. Afterwards, a reconstructed Celtic settlement can be visited.
The path then follows sometimes directly along the brook, sometimes somewhat away, following the course of the Hahnenbach. In the last part, it goes over the Wartenberg, which offers beautiful views of Rhaunen and its surroundings at some points.
The 15th stage of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig leads from Forellenhof Reinhardtsmühle, on the edge of the village Bundenbach, through the Hahnenbachtal to Rhaunen. At Forellenhof Reinhardtsmühle there is a hiking car park, and from there we can start our route directly. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig runs here parallel to the Soonwaldsteig and also to the Traumschleife Hahnenbachtaltour. It starts through the Hahnenbachtal, where after a short time we reach a viewpoint with a beautiful view of the Schmidtburg castle ruin. Continuing on to the Celtic settlement Altburg, where the paths of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig and the Soonwaldsteig separate again. We hike the Hahnenbachtal a little further before entering the Idarbach valley. We now follow the Idarbach to Rhaunen. Sometimes a little away, sometimes directly along the brook. In the last part, it goes over the Wartenberg, which offers beautiful views of Rhaunen and the surroundings at some points. This is where the stage destination is reached.

Our tips for a carefree hiking pleasure
Hiking is the perfect sport. With the right clothing and shoes, it is twice as fun. Functional clothing, poles, and breathable backpacks are comfortable when hiking. However, good shoes are indispensable. For longer distances, we recommend sturdy hiking boots with grippy, non-slip soles. Also think of sun protection and bring a drink. One liter of water is ideal.
The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig is a natural path, which is 65% over soft forest ground, grassy paths, or along brook courses. This special quality can, however, lead to problems after longer periods of rain and make parts of the path difficult to walk. Therefore, sturdy footwear is definitely recommended.
