The first Franja Marathon was held on July 22, 1982, under the direction of Zvone Zanoškar at the initiative of Tone Fornezzi-Tof. Already in 1978, Mr. Fornezzi wanted to ride the course, but had to turn back due to road construction at Kladje in Cerkno. Then in 1979, the Roga team led by Zvone Zanoškar rode the marathon route, which also received its name that year. Zvone, Tof, and the Roga cycling team, led by Žaubij and PolonÄiÄ, rested in Cerkno with a view of the sign Hospital Franja. The decision was made immediately, on Tof's initiative: Franja Marathon.
The event was revitalized in 2005 when the marathon took place within the Framework Cycling Festival. We added the Small Franja Marathon, two challenges for mountain bikers, the Family-School marathon for everyone, and a challenge for children. Alongside the festival, there were also lectures, a fair offer, and entertainment concerts. Last year, with the entry into the Alpe Adria Tour connection, a larger number of foreigners, especially Italians, participated in the Franja Marathon Barcaffé for the first time.
Another milestone is set this year, as the Franja Marathon is the official candidate for membership in the series of the best cycling marathons in the world under the auspices of the International Cycling Union UCI-Golden bike.
