Pilgrimage Route Loccum-Volkenroda

In the year 1163, 13 monks of the Cistercian order set out from Volkenroda heading north. In Loccum, they founded a new monastery. In 2005, the two former Cistercian monasteries Loccum and Volkenroda were reconnected by a pilgrimage route. It follows a varied natural landscape along the Weser, Leine, and Unstrut for about 300 kilometers. It leads over the Weser Mountains, the Vogler, the Solling, and through the Eichsfeld. Numerous individual pilgrims and pilgrimage groups inquire about accompaniment on the way. They look for a group, ask about texts, rituals and spiritual design elements, about accommodations and catering options, about tips for arrival and departure, and possibly also about luggage transport. Certified pilgrimage guides offer day stages and multi-day pilgrimage journeys on the Loccum-Volkenroda pilgrimage route and the side routes "Kloster Mariensee" and "Kloster Möllenbeck." They invite you to set out, whether young or old, experienced in pilgrimage or started as a hiker and arrived at the stage destination as a pilgrim. An appealing addition to the main route is the side route "Kloster Mariensee." On it, pilgrims can hike from Loccum Monastery around the Steinhuder Meer.  The side route runs about 80 kilometers via Mardorf to Mariensee Monastery and back to Loccum via the fishing village Steinhude. The two monasteries are connected by visitations in the 15th and 16th centuries. The landscape of the side route "Kloster Mariensee" is characterized by vast meadows and moorlands as well as northwest Germany's largest inland sea, from which the outliers of the Rehburg Mountains offer a splendid view.
