80 km hiking route along the former border between Altmark and Wendland
The journey is the destination! East and West meet at the former border strip and vice versa. Stories live here: Cold War, time of change, 30 years of living together in a united Germany. Memorial sites and nature conservation projects come together. And you are right in the middle. Learn what it means when East and West slowly grow together.
You can start either at the Green Belt INFO POINT "Hostel at the small vineyard Dahrendorf" in the northwestern Altmark, 500 m from the former border strip and directly next to a walkable GDR border tower. Or at the "Borderland Museum" in Schnackenburg on the Elbe, the old customs station. The 80 km long hiking trail passes through about 20 different natural areas – sand dunes, but also vast meadows, lakes, or damp alder floodplain forests. 1,200 animal species listed on the Red List of endangered species live today in the hiking corridor. A biodiversity hotspot.

The route also leads to important memorial sites and destroyed villages on the former inner-German border. Along the way, hikers meet authentic people who live in the small villages of the former restricted area – either long-established residents or newcomers.
The nearby towns of Lüchow, Bergen (Dumme), Salzwedel, Gartow, Arendsee, and Seehausen can also be visited. Off to the Green Belt, whose beautiful motto is: From death strip to lifeline.
