Murau wood town walk

A special kind of time travel: Walk with the former mistress Anna Neumann through your city. She will show you where she lived, how she lived and where she is buried today.

As early as the 12th century, a small settlement of merchants may have existed around the church of St. Egidi near Murau, because individual structural elements of the church refer to its foundation at that time.

According to tradition, the area around Murau was called Luba in the early Middle Ages. This could have been the name given by Slavic settlers, but there is no reliable evidence for this. However, the first documented mention of Murau as Murowe dates back to 1250.

Ulrich von Liechtenstein founded a market at the foot of today's Schloßberg around 1270. This location seemed more favorable in terms of terrain than around the church in St. Egidi, and also lay in the protection of the castle, which was built as early as 1250. The people resettled; they were offered certain incentives with various favors, such as exchanging the old dwelling place for a new one. The settlers were given wood and grazing rights in the surrounding area to go with their homesteads and thus had not only material for building houses, but also a livelihood for their livestock. The new foundation had its core around today's Schillerplatz (main square), which was then called Freitagmarkt (Friday market) and was completed around 1298.
