The Grimming is an isolated mountain range between Ennstal and Salzkammergut, which is part of the Dachstein mountain range. Due to its imposing appearance, it was long referred to as the highest mountain in Styria, Mons Styriae altissimus.
To the southwest of the main summit is the Grimmingtor, a wall depression around 50 m high and 15 m wide, which is closed off by a 10 m thick rock overhang. To the east, it is bordered by a large rock rib, which gives it a gate-like appearance when illuminated. According to legend, valuable riches are hidden behind this “gate”.
The mountain is a popular attraction for mountaineers and climbers.
From Trautenfels through the Schneegrube (south-east): Most popular ascent via the Grimminghütte. This route was first climbed by Heinrich Heß in 1888.
From Kulm (northwest): Starting behind the ski flying hill, through the summit cirque where the bivouac box is located.
From Trautenfels via Kasten and Multereck: Here you first cross the eastern pre-summit (2,176 m) before reaching the main summit.
From Niederstuttern to the Grimminghütte, then left via the south-east ridge or right via Kasten and Multereck to the summit.
