The lake was created when mines underneath colapsed and is now a popular afternoon destination for locals. Only a few steps away from the blue surface you can visit the Željna Caves, where people have been searching for shelter already over 20,000 years ago. You can also visit the Forest Reserve Pugled-Žiben and from there, you can enjoy the silence all the way to the Roška saw, whose remains are evidence of booming economic activity.
The only “disturbance” of the region are the remnants of the KoÄevarske villages, whose inhabitants have long sought a new living space. As the opposite of these remnants, the Rajhenav virgin forest and the Queen of Rog, insist on the same place for centuries as the forest reserve of Prelesnikova koliševka, hiding the cold north flora. KoÄevje is famous for its brown bear population, so there is a big chance you will meet or see them.

Standard hiking equipment
General rule when moving in the bear country is to make some noise during the hike, so that the bears can move away. They are not agressive unless you surpise them or meet them with cubs, than they can get protective. Also, keep the dogs on the leash at all times.
From Ljubljana head towards Škofljica and Kočevje.
Kočevje is easily accesible with train or bus from Ljubljana.
Free and payable parking available.
There are other shorter trails in the area as well, so check the www.kocevsko.com/en page for all the info.
For accomodation check Hostel Bearlog or Camp Jezero.
Beware that you are in bear country, so take appropriate meassures. Also the area is less turist-developed so plan your overnights and refreshments.
