BERNSTEIN TRAIL East route | Stage 5 | Rust - Sopron (HU)

You start in Rust, the first meters on the same path as the previous stage, down to the street "Am Seekanal." Now turn right heading south and continue along the small road until a sign on the left directs you onto a field path. At the next junction, turn right and immediately left again, now following the service road parallel to Neusiedler See to Mörbisch.

Briefly follow the main road coming from the lake towards the lake on the left side, but before the Mörbischer Hof, immediately turn right again onto the service road. Now you always walk along the shores of Neusiedler See, with reeds on the left and vineyards on the right, straight ahead until the path bends left at a lookout tower. This way you reach a small road right at the Austrian-Hungarian border.

Here turn left over the border and follow the small asphalt road, which is also used by the Neusiedler See bike path, always straight ahead until you reach the beginning of the village of Fertőrákos, where you join a larger road.

If you follow the road to the left, you will reach the entrance to the Roman quarry of Fertőrákos after about 200 m, where a remarkable rock theatre is installed. For a small fee, you can witness the grandeur of the quarry and the acoustics in the rock theatre with your own eyes. However, the Bernstein Trail does not lead left at the junction but right uphill. After about 100 m, turn left onto a gravel path and descend via small paths to a small valley with some houses. You cross the stream over a green bridge and walk along very beautiful forest paths, parallel to yellow and green markings, to a junction at a paved path section. Here turn left and immediately after 5 m turn right again, parallel to the yellow markings. Via this very beautiful hiking trail, you reach a huge lookout tower.

Now choose the only forest road to the left, with yellow markings running parallel, downhill to a junction. Here turn left and follow the very beautiful forest and woodland path, which runs parallel to blue markings, for a long time until you reach a forest junction. Turn right onto another forest path, which runs parallel to green markings, and continue hiking in the idyllic forest until you reach an asphalt road. Attention! After crossing a gravel road, do not go straight over the forest road but about 5 m after the gravel road follow the less distinct forest path half-left; this can be easily overlooked.

Now you have left the forest again. Follow the asphalt road now to the right and then straight ahead until you see the distinctive church "Szent Mihály főangyal-templom." Now you are in Sopron. Follow the signage and a small right-left shift into the parallel-running "Tómalom ulica," over which you reach a roundabout directly in front of the church, with the aforementioned church in sight.

Go past the church to the right; parallel to it run yellow-red markings until you reach the "Sas tér" square. Here you are already at the edge of the old town. Turn left downhill into the "Szentlelek ulica" and thus reach the large ring road that goes around the old town. Cross the ring road and keep diagonally right, through the "Firetower," to the beautiful main square of Sopron: your stage destination is the tourist information directly at the main square.
