The multi-faceted circular hiking trail H5 takes you on a short vacation. Starting right from the parking lot of the "Waldhotel am Stausee", the panorama reminds you of a distant holiday destination all year round. The circular trail leads through forests, past fields and meadows, over a stream, and directly along the reservoir. The rest areas along the way invite you to linger and enjoy. On short, sometimes steep ascents, you reach a height from which you can look into the Saale valley before soon enjoying the proximity of the water again in the valley. Back at the parking lot, the "Waldhotel am Stausee" invites you to dine on the terrace with a dreamlike view over the "Thuringian Sea".

Coming from the A9 take exit 26 (Triptis) and continue on the B281 west towards Neustadt an der Orla. Follow the federal road further via Pößneck towards Saalfeld. Leave the B281 at Unterwellenborn (Thuringia Steelworks) south towards Großkamsdorf / Goßwitz / Bucha. In Bucha continue south on the L2384 to the Hohenwarte dam.
You can conveniently reach Hohenwarte by KomBus line 546 from Saalfeld direction (connection to Deutsche Bahn). Line bundle 5 connects the entire reservoir area with coordinated public transport services.
