Take the paved road that climbs along the side of the mountain, then follow the signs for the waterfall as the route is clear and well marked. For about ten minutes, follow the dirt road which quickly turns into a path, leading into the forest. The first part of the walk is easy; the path winds among tall chestnut trees and large boulders covered by a characteristic layer of moss and lichens. After passing a clearing, the path narrows and becomes more exposed; therefore, be careful: suitable shoes with grip are needed. The Sovaglia stream, with the beautiful 68-meter high waterfall, is reached by continuing on the path for about 30 minutes. A small footbridge crosses it, and it is while crossing this bridge that you can admire the Cascata del Botto (warning: swimming is forbidden). From here, you reach the village of Rovio in a few minutes, nestled at the foothills of high peaks with a beautiful view of Lake Lugano. The romantic church of San Vigilio is clearly visible, on a small hill to the left of the more imposing church of Saints Vitale and Agata; it takes just a few minutes on the paved road to reach it. The return can be made by following the paved road connecting Rovio to Melano, which takes about 1 hour walking, or by going back the same way along the outbound path. Photo copyright: Milo Zanecchia
