The Elbe-Lübeck Canal is 61.55km long and was inaugurated in 1900. It is a watershed canal because it crosses the watershed between the North Sea (Elbe) and the Baltic Sea at about the height of Mölln. The cycle path along the Elbe-Lübeck Canal runs along many stretches of the old salt road and passes through several interesting places such as Lauenburg, Mölln and Lübeck. It is therefore not only scenic but also offers industrial culture, the Hanseatic League and Till Eulenspiegel.
The route is actually impossible to miss, as it always follows the canal. Only at the beginning in Lauenburg and at the end in Lübeck do you have to be a little careful not to get lost.
A roadworthy bicycle and helmet are required. A rain jacket can never hurt in the land between the seas and is packed small.
The route is car-free over long stretches. This makes it all the more important to pay attention to road traffic at intersections and in Lauenburg, Mölln and Lübeck.
Coming from Berlin or Hamburg via the A24 to the Schwarzenbek exit. Then take the B404 to Schwarzenbek and continue on the B209 to Lauenburg.
Coming from Lübeck on the B207 to Schwarzenbek, then continue on the B209 to Lauenburg.
There is a train every hour between Lübeck Hbf and Laueburg an der Elbe, which takes about one hour to cover the distance.
.The tour starts at the station in Lauenburg and ends at the Holstentor just a few hundred metres from the main station in Lübeck.
There are parking spaces at the railway station in Lauenburg. Parking is free of charge here (as of autumn 2018).
Take a short turn in Mölln, enjoy the old town and rub Till Eulenspiegel's thumb - that brings good luck.
