On this circular route, you can discover protected species such as the red kite and their habitats along the Vereinigte Mulde around Hohenprießnitz.
The Mulde river has special protection due to its largely natural course with high river dynamics, leading to the formation of oxbows, sandbanks, islands, and gravel bars. The floodplain adjoining the river “lives” from flooding and simultaneously serves water retention and groundwater renewal.
The route is named after the bat species “Grey Long-Eared Bat” found in the castle park and surrounding area. The “Greater Noctule,” “Brown Long-Eared Bat,” and “Mop Bat” also occur here. The numerous oxbows (3, 4) provide habitats for dragonflies (e.g., Northern Emerald, Banded Demoiselle). Many bird species (e.g., white stork, osprey, common sandpiper, red-backed shrike) and amphibians (e.g., garlic toad, tree frog) also depend on the floodplain.
You start at the car park at the entrance to Hohenprießnitz – from here you reach the footpath along Eilenburger Landstraße via the Lindenallee. On this path, you will pass Schloss Hohenprießnitz on your right and get to the village square, Muldestraße, and Ziegeleistraße, leading to the Mulde cycle path. Shortly after Hohenprießnitz, you can take a detour to the left to the Elsteich (private property). Follow the Mulde cycle path to Oberglaucha, where you turn left at the Weißstorchenhorst onto Lindenstraße and cross the B107 to reach the field path "Löbnitzer Weg." After about 1.75 km on "Löbnitzer Weg," turn right to Niederglaucha, passing the Landhaus Böhm. In Niederglaucha, follow the Muldental hiking trail and continue through Oberglaucha. In Oberglaucha, keep always to the left – this leads you onto an old orchard avenue, which takes you back to Hohenprießnitz. In Hohenprießnitz, you meet the Muldental hiking trail again, pass the castle and its park on the lower side, and finally return to the starting point at the car park.
As a shortcut, on the outward journey in Oberglaucha, you can turn right at Weißstorchenhorst directly onto the Mulde hiking trail and follow it back to Hohenprießnitz.
