The sanctuary of San Besso impresses for its position at the base of the rock to which it seems to lean. It was a pre-Christian place of worship due to its presumed strong ritual energy, while Catholic tradition tells that San Besso was thrown down from the cliff of Monte Fautenio. Part of the complex is used as an unmanaged refuge (locked).
Just beyond the sanctuary there is a nice alpine pasture that hosts cows during the summer season.
The first part of the proposed route follows the royal hunting road that climbs easily crossing a sparse larch forest, very colorful in late October. Once on the path, the larches become rarer, then giving way to open meadows in the higher zone.
The descent goes along the steep Fanton stream arriving at the locality Pignon, made up of some recently restored stone huts, from which there is a great view of the village of Campiglia Soana below.
From the parking lot, continue on the dirt road towards Pian dell'Azaria. Cross two wooden bridges and then the ascent becomes steeper. Just before the third wooden bridge, the path to San Besso starts on the right (noticeboard and signs). After a few minutes you reach a fork: turn left (path 625). The other path will be the return route. The trail then begins to climb steeply with a zig-zag pattern, on a trail always clearly visible. You then pass the ruins of an alpine hut (Ca' Nuova - 1819 m) which will remain on your right. Continuing to climb in the larch forest, you reach the base of the natural amphitheater that a little further on hosts the sanctuary. After a flat stretch, the path to San Besso is steep again and partly damaged by the passage of cows.
From the sanctuary, reach the pass a few meters away, located to the right when facing the building. From the pass, follow the signs to Campiglia Soana going down towards the valley bottom. The path descends steeply alongside the stream until about 1780 m, where it turns right, first reaching a cross and then the locality Pignon (1630 m). Here turn right and reach the fork passed on the way up. From here, descending to the left, follow the outward route.
Non-slip sole footwear, wind/rain protection, a warm layer, hat, and sunglasses are recommended.
There is a fountain for water refill at the sanctuary.
From state road 460 in Ceresole, turn towards Pont Canavese and, passing through the village, follow the road to the Valle Soana. Through a road with many curves, you pass first Ronco Canavese, then Valprato Soana, and finally Campiglia Soana. Continuing along the road you reach the parking lot where the asphalt ends.
At the end of the road at the bottom of the village, there is a large parking lot.
