Popis
The area, one of several Nature Reserves managed by the Metropolitan City of Turin, covers an area of about 146 hectares included in the territories of the municipalities of Baldissero Canavese, Vidracco and Castellamonte. The Pelati Mountains are barren and almost completely devoid of vegetation, which is why they are also called "Red Mountains": a characteristic due to the nature of the rock and erosion caused by rainfall. Home to olivine and magnesite quarries since the second half of the 1700s for the production of ceramics and refractory materials, today the site is partly protected to encourage environmental restoration. The rocks are colonized by various types of lichens, while the rest of the area is mostly covered with sparse shrubs, dry grasslands and heaths. Juniper and Butcher's Broom are fairly common, with some presence of Birch, Robinia, Downy Oak and reforestations composed of Scots Pine, Pinus strobe, Black Pine and Larch. In the vicinity of the Malesina Creek, shrub belts of White Willow are encountered. Interesting and rare flowers include Campanula bertolae, Linum suffruticosum, Fumana procumbens and the more common Sedum alpinum and brightly colored carnations, capable of growing even in hostile environments.

Informace o trase
Trasa
The route starts from the square of the Town Hall of Baldissero: on the oposite side of the municipal building take Via dei Monti Pelati that immediately becomes a path (steep only in the first few meters), identified as nature itinerary no. 1 of the signs on site. Follow the evident track until it crosses CAI path no. 751, here take the path on the right continuing to follow the signs for itinerary no. 1.

At the end of the descent you reach the asphalt road, which you follow by turning right to the chapel of San Rocco. Continue up the dirt road upstream from the chapel to the Cives Tower, where there is a picnic area excellent for a break.

On the opposite side of the tower a gap in the fence allows you to continue along a strerrata that leads roughly to the ridge line. Now proceed along the marked trail (trail 751) that crosses longitudinally and almost level throughout the reserve and descends to the hamlet of Bettolino. Upon reaching the paved road, turn left, as well as at the next junction, returning to the starting point.
