Popis
The stage passes through woods and clearings, crossing valleys and suggestive slopes and touching numerous “Téit”, groups of huts with rye straw roofs, offering tangible evidence of what Alpine life was like until a few decades ago, and then reaches Palanfrè, a hamlet of Vernante, revitalized by slow tourism, to the south.

The itinerary starts from the railway station of Vernante, the town of Pinocchio murals, one of the municipalities of the Maritime Alps Park, located on the Cuneo-Ventimiglia-Nice railway, a great engineering work inaugurated in 1890. Crossing the town, located at an altitude of 790 m., allows an immersion among the numerous murals dedicated to Collodi's puppet and the characters of his book.

Worth noting is the Bec Moler Quarry that served the town's glassworks, and from which millstones were extracted in the past - hence the toponym - which ends on a secured quarry terrace, from where you can enjoy a wide panorama of the quarry itself and Vernante; the "Roccette di Napoleone" on which some crosses are engraved as evidence of a clash that took place on 8 August 1794 between French and Austro-Piedmontese troops who, aided by the local population, repelled the assault; Tetti Colletta (1,226 m.), a hamlet where you can see the remains of the community oven dating back to 1908 and the cistern for the water supply, built in the basement of a building adjacent to the oven, as well as various votive pillars.

Palanfrè is a happy case in the Maritime Alps of successful urban and economic revitalization of a small hamlet that had become uninhabited, so much so that the road remained closed in the winter. Today it has become the land of enchanted creatures that have inhabited the magical beech forests since the time of the Celtic populations. The extensive beech forest above Palanfrè, about 20 hectares, has been known since the 18th century as the "Bosco Bandito", or preserved from felling to protect the ancient settlement from avalanches. Since 1979 it has become the Natural Reserve of the Forest and Lakes of Palanfrè, a protected area of the Management Body of the Protected Areas of the Maritime Alps, where there are specimens of over 3 centuries old.

From Vernante Station, take the first stretch of asphalt road southwards to Palanfrè, until you come across the signpost for trail L26 - La Via di Téit on a dirt road that climbs up the slope quite steeply with hairpin bends, through old chestnut groves invaded by other broad-leaved trees, to quickly reach the entrance tunnel of a disused silica quarry: the Cava di Bec Moler. Leaving the entrance tunnel on the right, continue climbing to the left on the track with other steep hairpin bends, until you come to a pass where you come across a crossroads: in front of you is the path that descends to Funtana Bleu, on the right is the one that climbs the rocky spur of Bec Moler, while on the left trail L26 continues in the direction of Tetti Colletta along La Via di Téit. Once you have taken this last direction, after a stretch uphill just below the ridge, you change slope and on the Pianot de l’Arp you come across the so-called "Roccette di Napoleone". From here the trail continues on a stretch of slight slope inside the beech forest, which you cross slightly uphill to go up the ridge that separates the side of the Vallone Secco from that of the Val Grande di Palanfré: at the crossroads, keep left on the marked path that moves to the side of the latter. A short cut in the slope takes you back into the beech forest and, from here, to Tetti Colletta. (1,226 m.). After crossing the village, continue left, signposted L26A, in a South-South East direction, along a grassy ridge. Once you enter the forest, continue on a slight slope until you reach the Intaglio della Bercia; the climb along the well-exposed ridge leads first to Tetti David (1,284 m.) and then, after passing the remains of a watering hole, to Tetti Bertaina (1,324 m.) perched under a white rock face and still with some large huts with their roofs preserved. Beyond the grassy ridge on which the hamlet is perched, the path heads north-west, leaves a track on the right, passes a second watering hole and reaches the watershed of the Rio Cornalé valley, overlooked to the north by Monte Sapé. After crossing the stream, you pass on to the right orographic side of the valley and the path climbs into another beech forest. You enter the next small valley, climbing up to the watershed with the Vallone di Pioccia, at the entrance of which are the Tetti Doni (1,484 m.). After passing the spring that flows just beyond the village, you cut slightly downhill to the Vallone di Pioccia, following the L26 sign. After fording the stream, you continue bending east on the northern slope, in the beech forest that you cross halfway up the hill on a flat path: after a wooden walkway that crosses a steep and slippery section, you pass three steep avalanche-prone valleys in succession. The snow that accumulates here and remains, often frozen, even in late spring. The Pioccia snowfield at the bottom of the valley is the lowest in all the Maritime and Ligurian Alps, and in times past it was used as a "quarry" for blocks of ice. When you exit the narrow and steep valley, you descend for a short stretch through meadows and woods, then you start climbing again. You pass the Fontana del Saut and the crossroads on the left for the Due Ponti locality (signpost L26B), then you enter the Vallone di Franco, through a pass where there is a small ruin and you continue halfway up the hill between meadows and junipers, you pass another small valley, the Fonte Galina, then between beech woods you reach the elevated and panoramic clearing of Tetti Cucet (1,501 m.). From here the path is not very marked, so immediately after passing the hamlet you turn right, where a final short flat stretch begins, followed by the descent into the woods, with some narrow hairpin bends, to begin a fairly steep diagonal traverse that descends towards the wide clearing of the former cultivated fields downstream of Palanfrè. An up and down at the edge of the fields leads to the provincial road of the Valle Grande, at the first hairpin bend downstream of the hamlet of Palanfrè (1379 m.). You go up past the car park, the Chapel of San Giacomo dating back to the end of the 17th century, partially destroyed in 1755 due to an avalanche and then rebuilt, and then you enter the village.

Tipy
Vernante is an Alpine village in the Vermenagna Valley, at 800 m above sea level, on the Via del Tenda, already present in Roman times, today also included in the Maritime Alps Park, which has now become famous as the "Town of Pinocchio's murals".

The walls of its houses are painted with many murals depicting the famous puppet of Collodi: this is because Attilio Mussino, its most famous illustrator, spent the last years of his life in Vernante, from 1944 to 1954, with his last companion, Margherita, who was originally from Vernante.

To pay homage to him, in 1954, two Vernantesi, Bartolomeo Cavallera and Bruno Carletto, immediately nicknamed “the Cat and the Fox”, decided to revive the scenes of the children's novel on the walls of the town, reproducing the illustrations of the first edition of Pinocchio drawn by Mussino for the Bemporad publishing house and released in 1910-1911. Over the years, the murals have multiplied and today there are more than 150 illustrations that decorate every corner of the town, along with statues, puppets, silhouettes. In addition to the murals, there are numerous silhouettes scattered everywhere that tell the story of Pinocchio and at the northern entrance to the town there is also a monument dedicated to Pinocchio.

For enthusiasts there is also the city museum dedicated to Mussino, where you can admire the first illustrated edition of Pinocchio from 1911, the book with animated pages released in 1942 and the 33 illustrated plates of the last edition made by Mussino, which appeared in “Il Giornalino” in 1952.

• The Tourousela, a fortified tower of the Castle built in the 12th century, which overlooks the town from a panoramic point, built by Pietro Balbo, Count of Tenda, to defend the county, today called Lascaris Castle, from the name of its last owners, the Counts Lascaris of Tenda. The castle has a single central tower in the shape of an irregular hexagon. The keep was surrounded by walls with three other towers

• The parish church of San Nicolao, from the 13th century, later remodeled and today with a baroque façade

• The fountains, also widespread in the various Alpine villages

• The "Vernantin": famous handcrafted folding knives that were known and widespread throughout Piedmont and beyond, handmade starting from the blade obtained from a piece of steel, with a handle made of heated bone (or boxwood) then bent and smoothed and finally coupled with the worked blade, forged, ground and branded with the personal stamp of the cutler, and capable of "lasting a lifetime. The "cutlè" active in the 19th century were dozens, today some craftsmen continue this tradition. Points of interest

• The Bec Moler Quarry

• The Roccette di Napoleone

• The Téit and their rye straw covers

• The Pioccia snowfield
