Piemonte without a car | Stage 1: Ivrea-Andrate
Úroveň obtížnosti: T1
The first stop offers the opportunity to get to know the town of Ivrea, founded by the Gallic Celtic population of the Salassi, which later became the Roman city of Augusta Eporedia. In the year 1000 it...
Along the way, with a short detour, you can reach the Castle of San Giuseppe - in the Monte Albagna area - a high and panoramic point located in the center of a morainic arch, on the top of a hill: the area on which it stands had considerable historical importance as a military observation point for the Roman army in the war against the Salassi. The castle, actually a complex of seventeenth-century religious imprint, then fortified in the Napoleonic era, is now a hotel.
Once you reach Andrate, from the height of its 836 m., from the town center - called the Villa - you can appreciate a panorama that ranges from the Biellese Alps behind - dominated by Monte Torretta, 2,120 m., with a view of Biella and Valle d'Aosta, in front of the Colma di Mombarone - to the Serra and its Five Lakes.
The town, surrounded by natural environments and charming churches, has an Ecomuseum of rural civilization where the traditions of local rural life are told in an experiential way, with the exhibition of over 700 objects and tools and the possibility for visitors to participate in workshops on the activities of the past.
Just outside the town, in the Croce Serra area, is the Rubino Castle, built during the 1920s as a prestigious residence for the homonymous family of industrialists from Biella active in the field of agricultural and artisanal tools. Its architecture recalls that of a castle, with towers, loggias and battlements, and it is surrounded by a large park that was once enclosed by walls.
From Ivrea station, at the foot of the historic center, cross the Dora Baltea and head east, at the foot of the Morenic Amphitheater, in the direction of Cascinette di Ivrea and Lake Campagna, located east of Lake Sirio. Once you reach the Parafagiolo region, head north, following the western shore of the lake at a distance. After leaving the lake, follow a stretch of the road between Cascinette d'Ivrea and Chiaverano, a "slow and good living" city and of Rosmarinus officinalis, which is intensely cultivated here. Then turn left to follow a route on a little-used road, up to the height of the Torbiera di Chiaverano, where you turn right for a short stretch on the SP 75 dei Laghi Morenici. At the height of a small wood, before a grassy area, after about 300 m., the route leaves the provincial road: turn right following the signpost 860. The path passes the peat bog to the north in a westerly direction then turns to the north-east going up the hill, first on dirt roads, then on asphalted sections passing next to Casale Montresco, in the Bienca di Chiaverano area, among small fruit crops. You then pass the homonymous hill, passing not far from the remains of the Roman aqueduct of Ivrea, consisting of a covered masonry conduit that winds along a route of over 7 kilometers, starting from the Maresco di Bienca area through the Cinque Laghi area, reachable with a small detour, and then going up again towards the north reaching the hamlet of Bienca. Always following the signpost, you go up a dirt road, passing through Prà San Pietro, you cross the SP419 della Serra in the Termaina area. From here, up to the outskirts of Andrate - the balcony of the Canavese - you always go uphill along the ancient mule track, still with a cobbled surface, which connected Ivrea to Andrate reaching the end of the stage.
Ivrea can be reached by train from Turin Porta Nuova in 1h-1h,15 with the Turin-Aosta railway line www.trenitalia.com.
