No sooner have you left Walenstadt than you feel as if you’re on the west coast of the U.S.: “Kaliforni” is the starting point of the forest nature trail and the quiz. You’ll find out where the name comes from right in the quiz. A glance up the forested steep slope immediately gives you a sense of how important an intact protective forest is here. The great diversity of trees and shrubs makes it more resilient. On the forest nature trail, you can learn about 33 species, ranging from maple to woolly snowball. Rarer species like the serviceberry and the butternut are also described, and the only native palm tree grows here!
In the quiz, you’ll learn about the challenges young trees face, as well as the housing shortage for wrynecks.
The trail starts at the beach in Walenstadt and leads straight up into the forest, where you can look down at Lake Walen. The return trip follows the shore and winds through the vineyards back to the starting point.

Coming from Zurich, take the Walenstadt exit off the highway; coming from Sargans, take the Flums exit. Then follow the main road to Walenstadt and continue on to the train station. At the train station, turn right onto Bahnhofstrasse and follow it to the roundabout. Take the second exit there and follow Seestrasse for about one kilometer along Lake Walen. The Hotel Restaurant Seehof is located on the right, right on the lakeshore.
We recommend using public transportation: Take the train to Walenstadt. From the train station, take the B442 bus toward Flums to the Walenstadt, Hafen bus stop. From there, walk about 90 meters to the Hotel Restaurant Seehof.
Paid public parking is available at the Hotel Restaurant Seehof, as well as at other locations in Walenstadt.

Before or after the themed trail, you can enjoy a leisurely picnic by Lake Walen and take in the beautiful view of the lake and the Churfirsten mountain range at the same time.
