This loop route from Lourdes to the Tourmalet via Bagnères-de-Bigorre is an immersion into cycling history.
Dating back to 1902, the first cycling race across the Tourmalet pass, organized by the Touring Club of France, covered a distance of 215 km with two ascents of the pass. It was only in 1910 that the Tour de France included the Tourmalet in its route, giving Octave Lapize the honor of being the first to climb it in the lead during the Bayonne to Luchon stage. Legend has it that he shouted "you are murderers!" to the organizers. Since then, the Tourmalet has become an iconic climb of the Tour, registering the highest number of passages.
The rich history of the Tourmalet includes memorable moments, such as the epic battle between Schleck and Contador in 2010 and Thibaut Pinot’s impressive stage win in 2019. Finally, in 2023, during the Tour de France Femmes, Demi Vollering, emerging from the fog, triumphed at the Tourmalet and took the yellow jersey which she retained.
