The Sainte-Marie Abbey of Boulaur, a former priory of the Fontevraud order, is a monastery of Cistercian nuns.
In 2021, the Boulaur community counted thirty-one sisters, whose average age in 2020 was forty-three years old.
At the beginning of 2020, the sisters released a video on the Internet explaining their project to build "a 21st-century Cistercian barn." The building they want to construct will, according to them, allow them to quintuple their production by housing twenty-five cows, a dozen pigs, workshops, a cheese dairy, a charcuterie, a reception area, and an exhibition hall. However, as it is located within the protection perimeter of the registered monument that is the abbey, it must respect the local architecture by using typical materials: tile, stone, earth, wood. The community therefore calls for donations, in a video viewed more than 100,000 times.
