Nature-Saline-Moor Discovery Trail

Starting from the spa park in Bad Westernkotten, the route goes past the picturesque Schäferkämper water mill into the fields. After crossing the B1, the first highlight of the tour is reached. The approximately 450 ha large nature reserve Pöppelschetal, the largest dry valley in the Soest district. The circular trail leads through a fascinating landscape where various Schledden valleys merge and are home to rare plant and animal species. Keep an eye out for the red-backed shrike, tree pipit, and turtle dove nesting here, as well as the rare yellow-bellied toad. The old quarries and pastures tell of the human use of the valley over the centuries and provide an impressive contrast to the pristine nature.

The path now leads back towards Bad Westernkotten but follows the eastern edge. There, the next stop is Muckenbruch, a protected moor. With an area of almost 98 ha, this lowland moor offers a variety of habitats, including swamp forests, reed beds, and near-natural flowing waters. Here too, a meeting with the rare yellow-bellied toad is possible.
 Returning along the Forellenweg, you go back to Bad Westernkotten into the heart of the spa town. The spa park invites relaxation or active recreation.
The two large graduation towers provide a picturesque backdrop and invite you to breathe in the healthy salt air. The Kneipp facility with foot and arm basins is filled with Bad Westernkotten brine water from April to October. The barefoot path with various natural materials offers a healthy walking pleasure and harmonizes with the Kneipp facility.
