WaldKulTour - Mining at Kahlenberg - short tour

The richness of ore influenced the appearance of the Arnsberg Forest for centuries. Open-cast mining and mining tore large holes in the forest, charcoal burners produced huge amounts of charcoal to meet the energy needs of the ironworks. Cities were founded, and the growing population demanded more and more construction and firewood. Relics from this time can still be found in the forests today and testify to an almost forgotten industry and its impact on nature.

The forest and mining of metal ores in the Warstein area were in a centuries-long reciprocal relationship. Even if it is no longer so easy to recognize today: mining has greatly shaped the landscape around Warstein - comparable at most to the now so visible influence that limestone mining has on the landscape. The WaldKulTour path around the Kahlenberg in Warstein is intended to sharpen the eye of the interested hiker: where can traces of the long-gone mining in Warstein still be found in the landscape today, and what concrete effects did the centuries-long mining economy have on the forest?

The short tour is also suitable for a walk with children. It passes by a forest playground and is in close proximity to the Bilsteintal Wildlife Park.
