Located at an altitude of about 3,000 meters, at the foot of the Pizzo Tresero glacier, these engravings have been brought to light thanks to the recent retreat of the glacier and date back to a period between 3,600 and 3,200 years ago, during the Middle Bronze Age. The markings carved into the rocks smoothed by the glacier attest to the presence of humans in the high mountains since prehistoric times and suggest the existence of a true rock sanctuary.
The trail offers spectacular views of the Ortles-Cevedale massif and allows visitors to combine naturalistic, historical, and archaeological interests in the heart of the Stelvio National Park.
From the Berni Mountain Hut, follow the trail toward Punta Segnale. The trail climbs up the moraine slopes at the foot of the Pizzo Tresero Glacier. Just before the Bernasconi Hut, you’ll reach the area where the rock carvings are visible. The return trip follows the same route.
Hiking boots, layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water, and snacks. Hiking poles are recommended.
Hiking trail in a high-mountain setting. Always check the weather conditions before setting out. Be careful on sections with scree and unstable terrain. Do not stray from the marked trail, and do not climb on the engraved rocks to preserve the archaeological site.
You can reach the Berni Mountain Hut by car via the Gavia Pass road from Santa Caterina Valfurva.
The Gavia Express is the summer shuttle that connects Santa Caterina Valfurva to the Gavia Pass, with a stop at the Berni Mountain Hut. Reservations are required and must be made by the day before at the Santa Caterina Valfurva Tourist Office (Tel. +39 0342 935544).
Parking is available right next to the Berni Mountain Hut, from where you can start the hike directly.

The route is generally accessible from late June through September, depending on snow conditions. Before setting out, check to see if the Gavia Pass road is open and what the trail conditions are like.
Take a few minutes to look at the engravings: they are a rare record of human presence at high altitudes more than 3,000 years ago.
