Witnesses of the region's tumultuous past, many medieval fortress castles have overlooked the forests of the Northern Vosges - Pfälzerwald Transboundary Biosphere Reserve for generations. Built between the 12th and mid-14th centuries on impressive rocky outcrops, these castles, mostly semi-troglodytic, often seem to be one with their rocky support and offer superb panoramas.

Join the red square trail crossed with white heading towards the medieval playground at Gimbelhof. At Gimbelhof, take a left towards the playground following the red disk. After the playground, take a left again. Pass to the right of the large rock on the path then continue on the trail ahead up to the Hohenbourg pass. At the pass, after the tree bearing the "Col Hohenbourg" sign, continue on the white crossed square trail turning right towards the Loewenstein ruin, then proceed to the Hohenbourg ruins. At the Maidenbrunnen spring, continue straight ahead to Wegelnburg Castle. Then retrace your steps and go down onto the red square trail towards Fleckenstein Castle. From Fleckenstein Castle, return to the parking lot by the charcoal burners' path which runs along the access road to the Fleckenstein site.
