Island Wörth by rowing boat (summer only)

Today's hike begins at the Cultural and Conference Center in Murnau. We head south across the cultural park, keep right at the end, and follow the footpath over the railway tracks and under some mighty lindens. Shortly before reaching the “Münter House” we have a wonderful view of Murnau's St. Nikolaus Church and Murnau Castle (now castle museum). Two picture panels testify to these motifs, painted by Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter, each in 1910. A stele invites us to linger.

Stele 4: Münter House
At the end of the footpath lies to our left the Münter House, where Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky began their artistic work in Murnau from late summer 1908. The location and surrounding landscape had a highly intense influence on the development of the new, strongly expressive form of expression of both artists.

We keep right, pass a few houses and enter an old oak avenue, the Kottmüller Avenue. Soon we see on the right a small footpath that leads over the meadow and railway tracks. We take this path, cross the level crossing and reach Eiblwiesweg. We follow it to the right and at the end turn left onto the footpath. It leads slightly uphill, we reach the next street and turn left. After house no. 9 we follow the steps to the right uphill and reach a wonderful viewpoint with several benches. In front of us stretches the Murnau Moos, framed by the Alps. We follow the path along the wall and back downhill, cross the street (caution traffic!) and follow the signpost “To Staffelsee.” The footpath begins on the right next to the mini-golf course with garden café (closed on Mondays outside Bavarian school holidays), phone 0 88 41/4 78 53, and Trattoria Italiana (no closing days), phone 0 88 41/91 78, www.trattoria-italiana.de. On a small detour to the hill “Ludwigshöhe” we have a wonderful view of Staffelsee with its islands and of Seehausen. The footpath leads downhill and past several ponds to Seestraße, which we follow to the left. At the former kiosk Platzl am See we cross the street, in the bay behind is the boat landing stage “Achele.” Timetable: 0 88 41 / 62 88 33 or at www.seehausen.net.
From here we take the Staffelsee ship to the landing stage of the lake restaurant “Alpenblick” (no closing days from May, in winter on Thursdays), phone 0 88 46/93 00, www.seerestaurant-alpenblick.de, in Uffing. We cross the parking lot and follow the footpath “Staffelseerundweg.” We come to a small street, follow it to the left, reach another street and turn left again. We cross the street after about 50 meters and turn uphill into a footpath. We cross a small street, continue straight on the footpath and then turn left onto a field path. Shortly after that we reach a bench with a stele.
Description from Uffing station
Travel by train from Murnau to Uffing. Leaving the station, keep right, cross the level crossing and follow Bahnhofstraße toward the village center. The street leads slightly uphill and shortly before the crest, turn left into Jochbergstraße and follow it straight on. At a small roundabout follow the field path to the left. After a few meters a bench with a stele awaits us.

Stele 5: Summer retreat in Uffing
From here uniform route description
To continue the walk, turn right, pass a small playground, go straight ahead and reach Bahnhofstraße. We follow it left and later in the large curve go straight into Hechenrainerstraße. We go a stretch straight, follow the right curve, at the next fork turn left and immediately left again (dead end). Behind the farm to our right, we follow the unpaved small street to the right, where we reach a small footpath. Passing through garden fences, this path leads past a crucifix and finally down to the Ache. Along this stream, we hike further toward “Vogelmühle.”

Arriving here, we cross the bridge shortly behind the weir and go straight ahead. The path meanders through the agricultural properties of Vogelmühle, leads between two meadows and turns right after a small bridge. We walk beside the Ache, which picturesquely cuts its way through the terrain here. The footpath meets the road and we follow it for about 500 meters. Before Streicherhof, which can be seen in the distance, we turn left. The path passes wooded and less wooded areas. After about 1.5 km we turn left and the path leads us to the so-called Antlasgraben and then runs toward Schöffau. Shortly before Schöffau, we meet a tarmac road, which we follow to the right into the small village. The small village store is closed Wednesday afternoons.

In the village square there is the small St. Anna Church, a former pilgrimage church. In 1552 a devastating fire raged in Schöffau; around 1620, the church was partially rebuilt with original building material from the 14th century. Previously, for centuries the island church in Staffelsee also served Schöffau citizens as a place of worship. Burial mounds from 1550 to 1250 BC testify to the early settlement of this place.
To continue the hike, we go back a little from the village square and turn left at a sharp right curve. We follow Antlasweg to the right past some houses and a farm. We come to a small street, turn right and pass a small pond. At the sign “Uffing 6.4 km” we turn right, cross the Spindler property and choose the middle of the three roads toward Uffing. It is paved at first, then a field path.

Where the forest begins, the path forks. We follow it to the right and soon reach the path we already know from the outbound route. Eventually, we get back to the road to Uffing and the Ache and return the way we came.

Via Vogelmühle we reach Uffing, where there are various shopping, eating, and accommodation options, for example “Gasthof zur Post” (no closing days), phone 0 88 46 /6 91, www.post-uffing.de.
We return to the boat landing stage “Alpenblick,” take the Staffelsee ship and disembark in Seehausen. If we came by train, we return to Uffing station and travel back to Murnau from there.
Arriving in Seehausen, we turn left below the former restaurant Fischerstüberl. We follow the footpath along the shore and after a few steps turn right onto a small path leading uphill to a wonderful viewpoint. We let our gaze wander across the lake to Wörth Island, picturesquely framed by the mountain chain in the background.
We continue along the footpath on the other side, first staying left and immediately right again. We pass the Seehausen beach and turn left into “Rosspoint.” Shortly after, we see a small gravel path on the left that leads us to the shore of Staffelsee and to another stele.

Stele 6: Wörth Island
We linger here, immerse ourselves in the significant past of Wörth Island and end the day at this atmospheric place. Leaving, we follow Rosspoint again and turn left at the height of the beach onto Dorfstraße. We follow it to the left as it winds through houses, past the grocery store and bakery. Directly before St. Michael Church, we turn right at Gasthof zum Stern, phone 0 88 41 / 33 04, www.gasthof-stern.de (open continuously May to September, closed Wednesdays).
We walk along the beer garden, cross the parking lot, keep right and arrive at a fresh water Kneipp basin inviting us to step into the water. We follow the footpath to the left and reach Seestraße via a few steps. Here, we turn right, use the footpath beside the street, first arriving at the Murnau Staffelsee beach with the restaurant Lido am Staffelsee (no closing days from May to October, in October only Saturdays and Sundays from noon), phone 0 88 41 / 98 61, www.lido-murnau.de, and finally back to the kiosk at Achele. We return the way we came, cross Seestraße, and now follow the footpath on the left side, which gradually leads uphill along a creek and through old trees. We come to a playground, turn right immediately afterward, cross the street, and take the footpath that leads us up several steps. We reach Kohlgruber Straße (caution traffic!), cross it, go left, and after a few meters turn right into Josef-Fürst-Straße. We pass a few houses, then this street ends in a footpath. Where the path leads to the railway line, we use the crossing (beware train traffic!) and then keep left. We are now on the path where we began today's hike. We cross the tracks again (this time the Garmisch line, earlier the Ammergau line) and shortly after arrive at the Cultural and Conference Center Murnau, restaurant Auszeit (closed Mondays), phone 0 88 41 / 48 87 90, www.restaurant-auszeit.de.
Excursion tip for summer months: Rowing boat to Wörth Island
From the boat landing stage Achele, we pass the adjacent Murnauer Staffelsee outdoor pool and continue on the footpath beside Seestraße until Burgweg branches off to our left. We follow it until reaching on the right a footpath with signposts "Boat rental" and "Beach," where we turn. On the wooden bridge, we pause briefly because from here there is a direct view of Wörth Island, Simpert Chapel, and landing stage. We continue over a wooden jetty and reach the boat rental on our left. Between April and October, it is possible to rent a rowing boat here (but only in stable weather conditions!).
Wörth Island is privately owned and hosts a cattle herd. We remain exclusively in the area of the chapel and landing stage!
