Discover art and landscape along the art route at the Lower Lake. Enjoy views of Lake Constance and the hike along the protected reed shore. Steles show you the places where artists have captured the view of Lake Constance in their paintings, which you can visit along the way in the museum.
The hike leads to some of the most beautiful vantage points at the Lower Lake. Seven times you follow the view of a painter on the Lower Lake. Two hills have to be climbed, each with only about 50 meters elevation gain. Pure nature can be found on the path along the protected Wollmatinger Ried, where in May the Siberian iris turns the reed meadows into a sea of flowers. Cafes in Allensbach and Reichenau, as well as on weekends in season on the Hochwart, invite you to linger, which can extend the route. Then, at the end, a boat trip with the Alet ferry from Reichenau to Allensbach is highly recommended.
The route can mostly be completed by bike, but on some sections the bike must be pushed.

From the station, we go down to the lakeshore and follow it to the boat landing where the first stele with the painting “Boat Landing” by Richard Dilger (1887-1973) can be seen. Dilger lived in Allensbach since 1942 and worked in his large-format paintings in the style of "Karlsruhe landscape painting." From here, you walk along the lake westward (lake side of the railway tracks) and continue on the lake path. When for the third time from the right a path/underpass joins the lake path, on the left there is a fire lane to the lakeshore. There stands the stele “Winter on the Lower Lake” by Otto Marquard (1881-1969). We follow the path through the underpass (Am Kapellhof), cross the main street, and follow the path Am Kapellhof up to Kapplerbergstrasse.
Turn right and follow the street, which becomes Höhrenbergstrasse. After about 200 m, a footpath goes left (short steep ascent) to the Protestant Gnadenkirche on the Höhrenberg with magnificent panoramic views over the Lower Lake. About 50 m east of the church stands another stele: here Richard Dilger captured the “View from Höhrenberg.”
Follow the footpath eastward and then go left down the hill. Cross Höhrenbergstrasse and follow the alley to Konstanzer Straße, then left to the railway crossing at Allensbach station.
From here, the train can be taken to Reichenau station (every half hour), or cross the tracks to Himmerngasse, continue to Strandweg, then at the campsite level underpass the railway tracks, follow the bike and hiking path along the federal road to the first field path, cross the railway tracks again to the right and then along the railway tracks to Hegne stop. Here cross the tracks again and continue on the hiking path north of the tracks. Due to construction at Kindlebildstraße, B33 must be underpassed. Continue to Reichenau station, from there to Kindlebild intersection, cross at the traffic light, continue over the island dam to Reichenau.
Follow the bike and hiking path to the intersection at St. Georg (beautiful Romanesque frescoes, only limited viewing from May to October, the small museum opposite is accessible free of charge). Cross Pirminstraße, cross Oberzeller Straße again at the museum, and now pass the Café zur schönen Au westward towards the Hochwart (the tea house on Hochwart is already visible from afar). The highest point on the island (441 m) offers a wonderful view of Reichenau and the Lower Lake. Here are two art steles: Bernard Schneider-Blumberg (1881-1956) painted an oil painting here showing the view of the Münster and the west part of the island with Hegau, Mettnau and Bodanrück in the background. Franziska Hübsch (1857-1944) also painted the Lower Lake landscape here. The stele image shows the view of the east part of the island with St. Georg church and the city of Konstanz in the background.
We leave Hochwart via the paved path through the vineyards westward and turn right into Hochwartstraße, past the Ganter Hotel Mohren and left to Ergat, where the Reichenau Museum (opposite Museum café) with original paintings is located. We follow Priminstraße to the Reichenau Tourist Information; a painting by Heinrich Lotter (1875-1941) “Reichenau Monastery” can be found there. Follow the signs to the Münster, continue on Burgstrasse to the junction of Strandbadstrasse and then to the lido. South of the lido on the shore path, Georg Röder (1867-1958) painted a watercolor showing the view of Niederzell and Hegau. From the lido, follow the shore path past the marina (shortcut: from here, the passenger and bike ferry to Allensbach can be taken), then along Uferstraße (first Hermann Contractus Straße, then Seestraße) until it turns right below St. Georg church. Instead, continue straight on the shore path until you reach the path on the island dam again. From Reichenau station, the return trip to Allensbach can be started.
From April to mid-October, a passenger and bike ferry runs between Reichenau marina and Allensbach. http://www.schifffahrtbaumann.de/
