On this stage of the German Half-Timbered Road, there are numerous sights to admire and several bathing lakes along the way for a pleasant refreshment. The starting point of the route is between Bussen and the Swabian Alb directly on the picturesque Danube. Along the Danube, you pass interesting sculptures and the historic Wendelinus Chapel from the 14th century. A stopover in Biberach is worth it: the charming old town impresses with many half-timbered gems. Through an idyllic meadow valley, the route gently climbs to the height of Reute and continues to Steinhausen, where the “most beautiful village church in the world” is open for visits. At the Upper Swabian Museum Village in Kürnbach, you can stretch your legs for a while before continuing to Aulendorf. Here, the castle with its toy museum offers families with children a chance for a longer stay. In Altshausen, the ancestral residence of the Dukes of Württemberg can be admired.
The route starts through small, dreamy villages directly into the region of Upper Swabia, also called the “Baroque Kingdom of Heaven.” Athletic visitors can make a short detour to Bussen, Upper Swabia’s “holy mountain,” with a fantastic view as far as the Alps. We brush past the northern edges of the Federsee reed beds, an ice age lake and nature reserve, and reach the former free imperial city of Biberach an der Riß. Three important routes converge here—the German Half-Timbered Road, the Upper Swabian Baroque Route, and the Upper Swabian Mill Road. One of the most beautiful marketplaces in Upper Swabia, the half-timbered treasures in the Weberberg guild settlement, an extraordinary museum, and the garden houses of the famous poet Christoph Martin Wieland with adjacent park invite you to a stopover. Through the picturesque Wolfental, you ride past the “most beautiful village church in the world” in Steinhausen to Kürnbach, where the Upper Swabian Museum Village is located. The route then continues through gently rolling landscape in the Schussental valley over Aulendorf past the baroque castle Altshausen, the current residence of the Duke of Württemberg. Through the hilly landscape of the Alpine foothills, we reach the stage destination, the former imperial city of Pfullendorf with its remarkable historic old town. A visit to the Lake Park Linzgau is also worthwhile.
