The total area of more than 9,300 hectares, of which approx. 65% are alluvial forests, 15% meadows and approx. 20% water areas, offers a largely intact and near-natural floodplain landscape as a "green belt" between the conurbations of Vienna and Bratislava.

The Donau-Auen National Park is located between the European capitals Vienna and Bratislava and preserves the last large floodplain landscape of Central Europe on an area of more than 9,300 hectares. The Danube, which is still free-flowing here, is the lifeline of the national park over a distance of approximately 36 km. Its dynamic interplay with water level fluctuations of up to 7 metres constantly reshapes the floodplain landscape. Thus, the Danube creates habitats for a multitude of animals and plants.

With the establishment of the Donau-Auen National Park in 1996, this area was placed under international protection on a sustainable basis. Here, nature can unfold free of economic constraints - so that future generations can still experience its power and beauty for themselves.
The Donau-Auen National Park stretches from Vienna to the mouth of the March at the border to Slovakia. With a total length of 38 kilometres of the protected floodplain area, the National Park measures barely 4 kilometres at its widest point, as the floodplains are only found in the immediate vicinity of the river. In the north of the national park lies the wide plain of the Marchfeld. In the south, the border is formed by the edge of the Vienna Basin. Especially for the Viennese population the Lobau area is a traditional recreational area.

The long-distance hiking trail 07 and the Danube cycle path, which comes from Passau and leads via Hainburg to Hungary, pass through the national park. The protected area can be visited free of charge for walking, hiking, cycling, etc., there is no entrance fee. However, the rules of conduct, including the applicable road regulations, must be observed: It is not allowed to leave the hiking trails, furthermore there are some routes that are open for cycling as well as waters that may be navigated by non-motorized boats.

A wide-ranging visitor programme with guided hikes, canoe and rubber boat tours, events etc. also offers many opportunities to explore the national park in the company of national park rangers for a fee and to learn many interesting facts.
