The Zitzmannsdorf meadows, the largest coherent meadow area in Burgenland, appear at first glance to be completely flat. Slight differences in altitude and the resulting differences in soil moisture lead to a mosaic of semi-arid grasslands and wet meadows. Extensive mowing and back-streaming in the old drainage areas help to preserve these valuable wetland habitats for rare animal and plant species.
